Applying for a Permit
Follow these steps to obtain a permit:
1. Do your research! New operators are often surprised by what is required.
- Local municipality – typically requires a license/permit to do business and may also require bringing a building up to current codes.
- Equipment and design – codes require specific equipment and locations (e.g. commercial grade, accessible hand sinks, ANSUL). Taking over an existing business is often a trigger to require new code-complying equipment.
- State approval – some facilities (e.g. pools) or processes (sushi) require additional state-approved plans or documents.
2. The following must be submitted before the process can begin:
- Floorplan of the facility – shall include a listing and location of all equipment
- Proposed Menu (if applicable)
- Certified Food Manager information (if applicable)
- Application and fee (see below)
3. Consult with your inspector. After receiving the required information, you will be contacted by an assigned inspector that will advise on changes or additions needed before you can begin operation.
4. Schedule a Pre-Inspection. Contact us to schedule a pre-inspection, at least two weeks prior to opening day.
