Nitrates are naturally found in plants and in vegetables in different amounts. water glassThey are also found in groundwater depending on a number of factors including:

  • The amount of fertilizer and manure applied to crop fields and lawns
  • The density of septic systems in nearby areas
  • Bedrock or other geological features
  • Water moving through the soil from rain or irrigation

When nitrates get into our drinking water, they can pose a risk to our health.

Based on past data, we estimate that at least 30% of private wells in Rock County have high levels of nitrates. Nitrates are more likely to be found in well water than municipal or city water. If you get your water from a private well, you may be at risk and should test your well.
