Prevention

The best way to prevent the spread is through the MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) vaccination. The recommendation is as follows:

  • Children: CDC recommends all children receive 2 doses of the MMR vaccine.
    • First Dose: 12-15 Months
    • Second Dose: 4-6 Years
  • Adults: CDC recommends all adults, who do not have evidence of immunity, receive one dose of MMR.
    • Evidence of immunity
      • Written evidence of immunity
      • Laboratory evidence of immunity
      • Laboratory evidence of measles disease
      • Birth before 1957
  • Adults requiring 2 doses of MMR:
    • Adults, without evidence of immunity, who attend or work at post-high school educational institutions
    • International Travelers (6 months and older)
    • Children 6-11 months should receive 1 dose and then 2 doses following above schedule
    • Healthcare Personnel
  • Vaccinated prior to 1968 with inactivated (killed) measles vaccine or unknown type:
    • Should receive one dose of MMR
